Tito’s Vodka Alternatives at Comparable Prices

Most vodka distilleries strive to achieve as neutral a flavor profile as possible, and because of this, it is one of the easiest spirits to substitute one brand for another when bartending. While you can take any Tito’s recipe and make it with another vodka, here are some competing domestic vodkas that are also distilled from corn.

While it began as a Russian vodka, Smirnoff has been manufactured in the USA since the 1930s and is distilled from corn. Unlike Tito’s, they offer numerous flavored products in addition to their traditional vodka.

Prairie distillery, out of Minnesota, also distills its products from corn and is 100% certified organic. In addition to vodka, they offer gin and cucumber-flavored vodka.

  • Deep Eddy

Located in Austin, Deep Eddy represents Tito’s stiffest local competition. Better known for their Ruby Red Grapefruit, Sweet Tea, and other flavored offerings, Deep Eddy also produces a classic vodka made using corn.

Better known for their neon-colored and unusual flavors, UV does manufacture a classic 80-proof vodka distilled from corn under the name “UV Silver,” as well as a 103 proof vodka named “UV103.” UV is also routinely among the most affordable Tito’s competitors.

Tito's Vodka at a shelf

While most vodka brands start out making traditional vodka and expand to include flavored offerings, Tito’s has taken the opposite approach. Despite originally making homemade flavored vodkas, Tito’s currently only produces their classic vodka. Tito’s does, however, offer instructions on how to infuse their classic vodka with fresh flavors on their website.

History of Tito’s Vodka

Tito’s Vodka (also known as Tito’s Handmade Vodka) is a brand of vodka produced in the first legally-established distillery in Austin, Texas. It was originally founded by Bert Butler “Tito” Beveridge II in 1995.

Considering its relatively short time on the market, Tito’s has rapidly expanded in availability and popularity. Founder Bert began manufacturing small-batch flavored vodkas for family and friends in the early ’90s. He tried to get distribution for his flavored vodkas but found the market was too saturated and was only able to sell 1,000 cases that year. After consulting with local liquor store owners, he realized there was an open niche for locally produced, high-quality unflavored vodka. With almost no experience, Bert set out to distill the smoothest, purest vodka he could. Although most vodkas are usually made from wheat or potatoes, Tito’s Vodka is a bit different. It is made from yellow corn, which gives it a slightly sweet aftertaste.

A decade later, it was producing over 150,000 cases per year, and even today, Tito’s remains a local favorite in Austin and has taken the rest of the country by storm.

Tito’s Vodka Production

Titos is made from corn mash using a pot still. While most vodkas favor a more modern column still, Titos sticks with a traditional and more labor-intensive method. Tito’s corn mash is distilled six times over to ensure smoothness, and the finished product is bottled at 40%ABV. Rumor has it that the original Tito’s still was homemade and welded together from spare soda kegs and a deep fryer designed for frying turkeys.

Tito’s has become known for its down-to-earth labeling and simple bottle design. Supposedly, the label was designed by an art student at the University of Texas in Austin for a $25 fee. Don’t let its humble packaging fool you though; they take the old saying “it’s what’s on the inside that counts” seriously.
